Sanitation Service

Sanitation service (trash pick-up) is mandatory in the City of West Orange.  The monthly fee for this service is $20.00 for residential service and $40.00 for commercial service and can be paid monthly, quarterly or annually.  If you wish to have your payment drafted from your bank account, you must first complete an authorization form at City Hall.

Collection days are Tuesdays and Fridays.  Please be sure your garbage is placed within three (3) feet of the curb by 7:00 A.M.

Household garbage, grass clippings, leaves, branches and tree trimmings are collected at the curb.  Please package your household garbage in a type of container designed for use as a residential trash container such as standard, lightweight metal cans, plastic cans or sturdy plastic trash bags.  You are limited to a TOTAL of ten (10) items (bags, containers and/or bundles) per service day.  Household trash is collected by Waste Management, Inc.

We do require that branches and tree trimmings be no greater than four (4) inches in diameter and be cut and bundled in no longer than four (4) foot lengths.  Bulky waste and bundles will be picked up only on Fridays by Waste Management.  Bulky waste items include white goods (refrigerators which have CFCs removed by a certified technician, stoves, ranges, water heaters, freezers, swing sets, scrap metal), furniture and other oversize wastes which are customary to ordinary housekeeping, and whose large size precludes or complicates it handling by normal solid waste collection.  Bundles include tree, shrub and brush trimmings that are securely tied together.

The City has dumpsters available for your use at a cost of $30.00 per dumpster.  If you fill it up and want it left for more use, you will need to pay $30.00 in advance each time the dumpster is to be emptied by the City while in your possession.  Also, you may keep these dumpsters for no more than ten (10) working days.  You must come into City Hall to complete the dumpster rental form.  Please keep in mind that there are a limited number of dumpsters and they are delivered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dumpsters are strictly for residential customer use.  Total dumpster weight should not exceed 500 pounds and cannot exceed the top rim.  Items that cannot be picked up, or placed in dumpsters include:  tires and batteries; paint; motor oil, lubricants or anti-freeze; items containing asbestos; large automotive parts; brick or concrete; hazardous materials; console televisions, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, box springs.

Holidays observed by Waste Management, Inc. are New Year's Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  There will be no trash collection service on these holidays.  Service will resume on the next regularly scheduled collection day.
